Best place of the week: Catskills country retreat for under $300,000

Ready for your own country retreat? A two-bedroom cottage is on the market for $285,000. On 5 acres of land outside Narrowsburg, N.Y., the cottage was built by Catskill Farms, a company that has built homes for Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. and comedian David Cross.

Catskill Farms sells a combination of custom-built and already finished homes. Cottage 35 is move-in ready, featuring wide-plank floors and salvaged barn beams. There’s a porch out back.

“People are drawn to this area because, of all the Catskills, it remains the most ungentrified,” says Catskill Farms owner Charles Petersheim. “It’s not about the art opening or new sushi place. It’s about the homes.”

Petersheim has sold 80 mini- and micro-cottages since he started focusing on small homes in 2007. He says people want something that they can take part in designing but is still within a manageable price range. Homes range from $160,000 to $400,000.
